Deaths from collapsed stage to be investigated

An investigation is underway into two tragic deaths after a stage collapsed whilst being built for Madonna in Marseille France.

Eight other people were seriously injured in Thursday's accident at the Velodrome stadium in Marseille.

Assistant prosecutor Marc Cimamonti said an investigation for manslaughter and involuntary injuries in a work-related accident has been opened.

Madonna has said she is "devastated" by the news of the deaths.

'Tragic news'

Her concert, planned for Sunday, has been cancelled.

Charles Criscenzo, a 53-year-old French worker, was killed outright in the accident and Charles Prow, a 23-year-old from Headingley in Leeds, died in hospital.

Second man dies from stage accident

A second person has died following the collapse of a stage being constructed for a Madonna concert in France.

Charles Prow, a 23-year-old from Headingley in Leeds, died overnight at a hospital in Marseille.

Technicians had been setting up the stage at the city's Velodrome stadium when the partially-built roof fell in on Thursday, bringing down a crane.

Madonna said she was "devastated" by the news. Her concert, planned for Sunday, has been cancelled.

Charles Criscenzo, a 53-year-old French worker, was killed outright in the accident, which took place at around 1715 (1615 BST).

Eight other people were seriously hurt, including an American who was hospitalised in a life-threatening condition.

More than 30 people suffered minor injuries and shock, according to authorities.

Poles upset by Catholic holiday performance

WARSAW, Poland — Madonna's "Sticky & Sweet" tour brings her to Poland's capital on Aug. 15, the Catholic holiday celebrating the heavenly assumption of the Virgin Mary. That's sparking criticism and plans for protests in the Roman Catholic country.

Marian Brudzynski, the leader of the Catholic group Committee for the Protection of Faith and National Traditions, said Thursday he is outraged by the timing. He plans two weeks of protests starting July 31 in downtown Warsaw.

Stage collapse in Marseille, France

A stage being built in France for a concert by pop star Madonna has collapsed, killing one worker and injuring six, emergency services say.

Technicians had been setting up the stage at the Velodrome stadium in Marseille when the partially-built roof fell in, bringing down a crane.

A French worker, 53, was killed and two of those hurt, a Briton and a US citizen, were seriously injured.

Madonna said she was "devastated" by news of the accident.

The concert, planned for Sunday, was cancelled.

The 60,000-seater Velodrome is France's second-biggest sports arena and home to the Olympique de Marseille football club.
